The VPo Man on the Long Path |
Before I caught my flight to Chicago, the VPo Man and I went for a little hike up Hook Mountain. Located just north of the village of Nyack, Hook Mountain offers up some excellent views of the Hudson River.
For a Monday there were quite a few cars at the parking area. The VPo Man knew exactly what was going on, "They're here to watch hawks." After about 10 minutes of climbing, we made it to the first overlook and there was a group of hawk watchers. They come every Monday and carry up some chairs and wait for some hawks. Since it's late in the season, they only spotted 13. We spotted a few Turkey Vultures, but no hawks.
We walked on now following the Long Path. We passed through a hardwoods forest. There is a little change in color, but does not appear as if this will be a good year. It has been just too warm and dry.
We then came to some more overlooks. The cliffs here are quite impressive. One spot, you can see straight down to a parking area. It's not a place you'd want to lose your footing.
I always like seeing that patch of prickly pear cactus. Makes the area seem so exotic.
