Independence Day

Kaaterskill High Peak from the Clermont Estate

Rolling grassy hills on the Estate

We declared independence on July 2nd, our true Independence Day. July 4th in actuality is a celebration of the document which is dated July 4, 1776.

For today, I wanted to set out somewhere that had some revolutionary history. Well, right down the road is the Clermont Estate, former residence of the Livingstons. It so happens Robert Livingston had a major role in our country's independence. Although not a signer of the Declaration, Livingston was part of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence.

The property has nice rolling hills along the river. Expansive views of the Catskills can be seen to the west. There are paths through some lovely gardens. This also makes for a great place to bbq with its many picnic tables and grills, which happen to face the wonderful views to the west.

  1. Remember our hike last 4th of July, when it was hot as hell, and you were limping, and we bushwhacked through those stands of Laurel? I still have the scar from that day. I still remember the blood soaking my sock. I remember falling on my face. I remember you cursing. Just the way I like my hiking, rough with dirty talk.
