After the wonderful ferry ride from the mainland, The Rocket and I decided to walk around the island following the cliff trail. This would go down as one of my favorite hikes of all time.
The walk starts in the village passing numerous art galleries and cafes. It's Maine, so there were many places selling lobsters. We eventually made it through the village to a trail that lead to Lobster Cove. This would be where we'd pick up the cliff trail, which takes you along the Atlantic Coast. Lobster Cove is also the site of a ship wreck. Walking along the rocky coast, you do not wonder why it'd be a bad situation if you get too close. The waves crash along the coast with such ferocity.
We continued walking along the coast admiring each cove we'd come across. The Rocket and I imagined how amazing this place would be in the winter. The dark clouds and crashing waves mixed in with a bit of snow and bare trees and a biting wind. Oh, how wonderful a place this would be in the winter! But, we didn't need to imagine too much, since today was a great day to be here.
Stopping in the museum, I read that Maine's coast is almost exclusively rocky. Quite different from the beaches of Long Island and the Jersey Shore, which I am most familiar with. For scenery, I prefer Maine's coast. The rocky shore and the crashing waves, blended in well with the grassy, pine tree lined trail that we walked. While admiring the views, I listened to the sound of the waves crashing and the sound of the seagulls. I thought to myself, "Is there anything more natural than this?"
We ended our day at the museum. Here there is a history section and an art section. I wish I had spent more time in the art museum. There were so many wonderful paintings. It was not hard to imagine why so many artists frequented this magnificent island.
Great pictures. Chrishiker.com is the best. I like the new panorama of the Hudson with the Catskills in the background. Looks like you had perfect weather in Maine. Coastal areas in the winter are a fav of mine. Once I went winter birding in Cape Ann, MA, which also has quite a bit of rocky coastline. Weather was sunny but brutally cold with high winds. Will never forget seeing a dovekie and razorbill floating just off the rocky shoreline.
ReplyDeleteSnow in August??? Wow, I hope some of it makes it to the Hudson Valley soon! It would be fun walking in it like at Tivoli Bays last October.
ReplyDeleteNo snow. We were just imagining what it'd be like in the winter here.
