While driving up to Schenectady, I realized I would not be making this commute again for a job. Remembering there is a brewery here in the old part of town, I decided to take a little wander and have a beer (or two).

It's hard to believe, but Schenectady was one of the most important cities in the U.S. at one time. It's location on the Mohawk River made it a major center of trade when the Erie Canal opened. Thomas Edison moved his company to Schenectady in the late 1800s and General Electric's headquarters have been located here for over 100 years.
Many of the buildings in the old part of town (located just north of I-890 along the Mohawk River) date to the 1700s. So many of the houses had historical markers outside their doors. I really enjoy walking about streets lined with colonial architecture. And it's even better to follow that up with a nice cold beer.
What a lovely little town. Hard to believe that GE still has its headquarters there. Any good eateries there?
