Located just 6 miles south of Port Ewen, Black Rock is a Hudson Valley treasure. Like Shaupeneake Ridge, despite its close proximity, this would be my first time hiking.
In an hour's time I would stroll along some of the most pleasant trails that I've been on. Not far from the parking lot, there is a crossing of Black Creek over a hundred foot suspension bridge. This is followed by an ascent through a wonderfully mixed forest of hardwoods and evergreens.
The trail then takes you along an old rock wall and past a few vernal pools. There is an area that is closed off for studying the impact of deer over-population. Approximately 3 acres are not welcoming to deer.
The trail then leads down to the Hudson River. Directly across is Norrie point and unfortunately an unwelcoming view of an ugly housing development. But, the great views are to be found north, where there is a nice quiet spot to just chill.
