Another of the great Catskill 3500 Club mountains, Bearpen provides some truly unique views the other mountains do not. The most northwesterly located mountain among the 35, Bearpen is the only one that provides views of the Schoharie Resevoir.
It's been at least 8 years since I last ventured this way. After making a couple wrong turns, I finally found my way to the correct dead end road to the parking area. In the past, I always did Bearpen in conjunction with Vly. Having forgot to wear my pants, I decided against making my way through the thick brush to Vly. Bearpen would provide enough of that.
Upon reaching the col of Bearpen and Vly (where there is a cabin), I noticed a map. Apparently the NYNJ Trail Conference now maps this region. In the past, Bearpen and Vly were the only 3500 Club mountains to not appear on NYNJ maps. This was a pleasant surprise.
Although walking through the brush could be rather unpleasant, it was nice to not have the noise and inhalation of fumes from the snowmobiles. After the views, the memories I have from this mountain are the snowmobiles. But it appears a local snowmobile club is maintaining the trails here. I'll take that.
