A Day in the Life of a Beer and History Junkie

St Mary's

It's been years since I first came across the website Views and Brews and making zero progress.  For years I have followed up a long hike with a stop at a pub.  Views and Brews focuses on Brewpubs.  Only recently have I been checking out some breweries.

Today I spent some time in Albany tying to find some work.  Missing out on the "almost full moon" last night, I had no intention of missing it tonight.  With crystal clear skies in the forecast, tonight would be a perfect night to watch the moon rise.  One can always count on September to bring us some of the most gorgeous days of the year.  Well, there happens to be a brewery in Albany and Lake George is the home of Adirondack Brewing Co.  Prospect Mountain sits just above the village of Lake George and would make an ideal spot to watch the moon rise.

Albany is not one of my favorite cities.  It's home to some of the most lazy, incompetent, ruthless people in the country.  But Albany happens to be one of the oldest cities in out country.  I've always wanted to visit the Schulyer Mansion, which was a home of my favorite founding father Alexander Hamilton.  This will have to wait another time, but I did get to wander around and enjoy some of the old architecture.

I really like this church with its two towers

Before I walked about, I drank down some Kick Ass Brown Ale at the C.H. Evans Brewing Co. at the Albany Pump Station.  Originally C.H. Evans brewed their beer in Hudson during the 19th century and early 20th century.  It shut its doors during the prohibition era.  It re-established itself in Albany in 1999.

On my walk many old churches can be found as well as the NYS Capitol.  Rockefeller Plaza is a treat with its water fountains and The Egg.  I'd love to go see a show there some day.  Also at Rockefeller Plaza is the Corning Tower.  Here you can take a ride up the elevator for a bird's eye view of Albany.  It's the tallest building in New York State outside of NYC.

Looks like a good spot for a beer

  1. Yea man- Albany is full of lazy, good for nothing morons. There is a lot of interesting architecture and history there however. The Church of the Immaculate Conception is nice. I can say that it definitely is of Gothic influence.

  2. Incredible pictures. Your pics make Albany look like an amazing place. Maybe it is. Weather looked perfect. My memory of Albany is old row houses occupied by students, a flat and open kind of dreary feel to the place, and the thruway that passes by it. Amazing that I spent all those years living NY and never really explored Albany. Albany's location is pretty good -- close to Saratoga Springs, the Dacks, the Berkshires, the Catskills, and the piney plain plateau. I'd probably be happy living in Albany, if I had a decent job. The suckiest thing would probably be the winter. Although, living there would provide more x-country skiing opps.
