I brought up some Hudson Valley brew |
To reach the highest mountain in Minnesota, one must drive to the northern reaches of Minnesota. It's a long way out, but it's a beautiful drive along Lake Superior. Eagle Mountain is further north than the most northern reaches of Maine.
From the town of Grand Marais, it's about 20 miles on county roads, with the last on decent dirt roads. Almost all the high points of the Midwest can be driven to. Eagle Mountain requires a 7 mile round trip hike.
I thoroughly enjoyed this walk. Despite the fog, there were some nice views of the lakes along the way. The trail is very similar to what we come across in the Hudson Valley. Although the summit is at 2,300 feet, there is not much elevation gained. The shore of Lake Superior is at 600 feet and the vehicle made most of this climb.
No views on the summit today. |
The region has received quite a bit of rain recently, much as the northeast has. I'm not sure if I've ever experienced so much greenery.
Wow. That's place looks amazing. So lush. So verdant. The air must smell really good there.
