No natural ground here, but this is the approximate location |
Just for kicks, I set out for the high point of Chicago. On the map, it appears it's in South Chicago, which is notorious for its high crime rates. Setting out in late morning, I hoped to avoid any unwelcome encounters.
The view from the high point |
Once south of the Chicago White Sox metro stop, I was the only white person on the train and bus. It's always a strange feeling, but the people were quite friendly.
I got off the bus and walked across the street to the high point (95th St and Claremont). It actually appeared to be higher than the surrounding area in a very subtle way. I stopped at a burger joint that advertised itself as, "Chicago's greatest burger". It was a mighty fine burger indeed!
From the high point I chose to walk down 95th street the 3 miles to the subway station. Most of the neighborhoods I passed through are hurting. A lot of abandoned, broken down buildings along the way. Pretty sad.
Plenty in this neighborhood |
