Lyon Mt from Chazy Lake |
Lyon Mountain looms large in the northern Adirondacks. At just under 4000 feet, Lyon and its neighbor Averill peak are the highest peaks north of the high peaks region. Lyon is located about a half hour from Plattsburgh. It's up there!
What brought me to this region is the simple fact that Lyon has a fire tower. When I first started the ADK/Catskill Fire Tower Challenge there were 28 peaks. After my last ascent to Woodhull Mt, Lyon was all that remained. Since that time, two have been added: Loon Lake Mt and Stillwater Mt. So due to the wait, I had a bit of extra hiking to do.
I first caught some nice glimpses of Lyon from the southern end of Chazy Lake. It rose roughly 2000 feet from the lake. It would not be easy.
When I arrived at the trailhead, there was one person who beat me. With just over 200 miles to get to this trailhead (all after 1230am) I was quite happy with my 8am start.

The trail started out friendly enough. A whole lot of shade the entire way. A couple stream crossings early on, but without any rain, the trail was quite dry. It's an almost 4 mile trail, so it never really got that steep until the end.
After a little less than two hours I reached the summit. I was surprised to see the fire tower was restored. Over the years I heard it was set to be removed. It was also said the fire tower was not necessary for great views. This is only slightly true. Without the tower, there are great views east toward the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain. But with the tower, there are views into Canada (I could see the St Lawrence River, but not Montreal), the high peaks and Chazy Lake. We're fortunate the tower remains.
