Shakespeare Arch Trail Kodachrome Basin State Park

Looking straight up at the Arch

Such  great desert scenery

Shakespeare Arch

Sand pipe.

Rock formations that are millions of years in the making

Mostly just sand with some dead trees sprinkled in

Looking over the basin

Slick rock!

Taking a break along the slick rock

Amazing how these roots stay above ground

Flowers.  Even in this desert

Above the basin with some dirt roads in view

Another contender for all-time great hikes.  On this day I experienced the desert heat.  Lizards were out in full force as were a few snakes.

Although Shakespeare Arch is rather impressive, this trail had so much more.  Spectacular views of the Basin below.  Beautiful red rocks with some crazy formations.  I would have liked to have been hiking this with the MC.  He could have named them all!

After passing the impressive Shakespeare Arch and a tall sand pipe, the trail traveled over some slick rock.  This section was quite fun to travel over.  A few spots I more or less used all fours because it was actually quite slick.  Although at over 6,000 feet, it really did get quite hot.  Temps were nearly reached 100.  The sun beat down relentlessly.  Though, unlike the northeast, the humidity was not unbearable.

  1. Flowers in the desert. Hardly seems possible. You're fortunate to have seen something so rare!

  2. Dig that sandpipe. When are they going to start drilling in that basin? We need what's there.
